NordVPN and VPN Unlimited compare & review July 2017

As we already know, whenever we connect to the internet, your location and other information can be tracked through your IP address and recorded by every single website you visit. I didn’t really think about it until I notice that all the search engines I use indeed record what I look for on the internet and send me ads about related products or nearby events to where I live.  Since all the devices that connect to the internet need IP (Internet protocol). I’s like the address of your computer. Your IP reveals your location and other information (what kind of sites you visit, what you usually search and so on). For this reason, your Internet service provider and anyone that has knowledge about this can always track and record all the actions you perform.

Your location and identity can be tracked, wherever you are and whichever public Wi-Fi hotspots you connect to. Who knows if “Free Airport Wi-Fi” is indeed from the airport or some bad guys just name their Wi-Fi hotspots so to spy on other people.

Being under surveillance from a third party seems unsafe, so I decided it’s time I needed a VPN.

NordVPN vs VPN Unlimited overview:

  • NordVPN is based in Panama where the internet is completely uncensored with no government surveillance and no flaw in data retention at all. Trial, price and refund policy:

  • NordVPN offers a three-day trial. There are year trial as well. They have are 3 plans for you to choose: the simple one (1 month plan) costs you 11,95USD/ month, the standard one (6 month plan) costs you 7USD/ month (save 41%), the best one (1 year plan) costs you 5,75USD/ month (save 52%). And the best of all is that they are offering a 2 year plan promotion now. You can save 72% with this option as it costs you only 3.29USD/month. NordVPN also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • VPN Unlimited offers six pricing plans, giving you lots of choice over how much you pay and how often you’re billed. The cheapest plan, Vacation, is intended for those quick jaunts away from home, and costs $3.99 for seven days. The Economy plan ups this to a month-long subscription for only $8.99 per month, $16.99 for three months, and $39.99 for a whole year. A three-year plan is also available for $89.99. Note that all prices are charged in full at time of billing. Unlike NordVPN, VPN Unlimited only offers seven-day money back guarantee.

  • NordVPN’s maximum speeds might not be as fast as some rival providers. However low latency is a plus point, especially for gamers. But the average time to connect to a server is 13 seconds and not every server is usable so you have to spend a while to look for a decent server.
  • VPN Unlimited scores about average in the speed category. It’s awesome to see which servers are under a heavy workload, but I think they should work on improving speeds across the service.

Security and privacy:

  • The mere fact that NordVPN is a no-logs VPN provider based in Panama makes it one of the best choices available for those whose primary concern is privacy and security. Panama’s internet is completely uncensored with no government surveillance. Not just that, Panama doesn’t have any flaw in data retention. Which means your data is completely protected. • VPN Unlimited uses OpenVPN on Windows and Android by default, which is great. On iOS and OS X, Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) is the standard encryption protocol. For this reason, it is necessary to download third-partyOpenVPN connect software to connect to VPN Unlimited’s servers with OpenVPN on Apple Mac devices. Still, this is impressive, and it is a great sign that there is no Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) in sight (other than for Windows Mobile).

Number of devices can be connected at the same time:

  • With NordVPN you can connect up to six devices at once. However, the network router counts as one device so obviously you can connect more if you’re at home. NordVPN works on your desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet, like this.
  • You can connect up to five of your devices on a VPN Unlimited account, with the option to add an additional device starting at $0.99 a month. You can add up to 10 additional devices this way and paying annually brings the price down further to $4.99.

Customer support:

  • NordVPN offers you several options just by clicking Help on the upper right of their website. If your problem is not in the list you can either type your enquiry or contact them directly via live chat or email. Their live chat is active 24/7.
  • Customer support is handled via a ticket system that is delivered to an email inbox. I found the firm to be helpful and fast, though I did have to wait a few hours for a reply on some occasions. On the website, there is a pop-up for a live chat feature. Sadly, it was never available when I went on the site, which means that it isn’t 24/7. I suspect it is only available in US business hours

Overall comparison between NordVPN and VPN Unlimited:

NordVPN seems to be a better choice when comparing to VPN Unlimited: better price and plans, the number of devices can be connected at the same time is higher. You actually can connect as many devices as you want with VPN Unlimited but you’ll have to pay. NordVPN also prefers 24/7 customer support when that of VPN Unlimited seems only acive during US business hour although they claim to offer 24/7 customer support too.
